The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs on Thursday, with the shortest period of sunlight of the year. Above the Arctic Circle, there is no sunrise or sunset for some period around the time of the solstice. Let's forecast the maximum temperature for our farthest north contest site, Nuiqsut, Alaska. Although the sun does not rise above the horizon, much of the day is in "civil twilight", where there should be enough light for most daytime activities.
